42nd journalist dies in Syria

20 year-old citizen journalist Hamza Mahmoud Othman was shot by a sniper in the Al Joubar neighborhood, in Homs.

He was the brother of citizen journalist  Ali Mahmoud Othman who was arrested on March 28th in Alep.

DCMF spoke to Mohamed Abu Shamsou, a Syrian activist and a member of Al Kusair’s press center, who confirmed the death of Hamza Mahmoud Othman.

He used to cover protests and interview the population. He would send his video footage and photos to international media.

Baba Amr press centre, in Homs, also confirmed the death and posted images of his body on Youtube.

Hamza Mahmoud Othman is the 42nd journalist losing his life in Syria since the beginning of the uprising in March 2012.

UPDATE 25/2012

On June 23rd, a Syrian coordination committee confirmed the death of citizen photographer Rami Ismail Iqbal. Iqbal is believed to have succombed to his wounds, in jail, after being shot by the Syrian army on December 21st.
