Samir Kassir Award: The Power of Words and Images

Tue, 19/03/2013 - Fri, 05/04/2013

Through the "Samir Kassir Award for the Freedom of the Press" the European Union recognises outstanding journalists who report on violations and violence, injustice and suffering, corruption and mismanagement, humanitarian and natural disasters, sometimes at the price of taking great personal risks in doing so.

The EU wishes to promote examples of how journalism could be a seed for positive change, inspiration for development, and the engine for democracy, human rights and rule of law. The EU is committed to promoting these universal values across the world and recognizes the important role that the media plays in giving a voice to all.

Sometimes images can speak louder than words. This is why the 8th edition of the "Samir Kassir Award for the Press" sees for the first time the introduction of a new category, the Best Audiovisual Report. Images now come instantly, from all sides and all sources; their potential to influence thought and action has never been so great.

The Award is a tribute to Samir Kassir's battle for free press and free speech. His personality and accomplishments continue to inspire journalists to be courageous and professional in gathering, reporting and interpreting information.

We look forward to receiving informative, thought-provoking and inspiring articles and images.

Good luck to all participants!
